What to expect on a photography tour in Namibia and South Africa

Towering dunes. Desert elephants. Abandoned diamond towns slowly disappearing beneath the sand. Ancient quiver tree forests beneath the Milky Way. Namibia is one of the most visually extraordinary countries on Earth – and the focus of Will Gray Photography’s flagship small-group Namibia Photography Adventure.

Led by award-winning travel writer and photographer Will Gray, these carefully researched tours are designed for photographers who want more than a quick circuit of the highlights. The emphasis is on time in the field, strong photographic opportunities and travelling with someone who knows the country well: its changing light, remote landscapes, wildlife behaviour and the practical realities of photographing in the desert.

The 17-day Namibia Photography Adventure combines many of the country’s defining locations in a single journey. Photograph the sculpted dunes and skeletal camelthorn trees of Deadvlei at first light; explore the haunting remains of Kolmanskop’s abandoned diamond-mining buildings; track wildlife in Etosha, kayak with seals in Walvis Bay and capture some of Africa’s clearest night skies above quiver tree forests and remote desert camps.

Along the way, there are opportunities to photograph mountains, desert coastlines, rock art and the extraordinary sense of space that makes Namibia unlike anywhere else.

Groups are intentionally small – just seven guests – allowing for flexibility, individual guidance and a more relaxed pace. Working with trusted local partners and guides, Will combines more than 30 years’ experience as a journalist, photographer and expedition planner to create tours that are both professionally organised and genuinely personal.

Alongside the flagship Namibia Adventure, he also offers a photography expedition into Namibia's remote Kaokoland and a seasonal tour to photograph the wildflower landscapes of Namaqualand in South Africa – each designed with the same focus on expert planning, small groups and serious photographic opportunity.
