Namibia, Kaokoland desert with sand dunes and mountains, wilderness photography expedition

Kaokoland Wilderness Photography Expedition

A remote wilderness photography journey through one of Southern Africa’s last great untamed landscapes. Photograph desert-adapted wildlife, dramatic scenery and extraordinary night skies on this small-group expedition deep into Namibia’s Kaokoland region – reaching as far north as the Kunene River and Hartmann Valley (pictured above). Launching in 2027, this unforgettable adventure combines lodges and fully-supported camping. Just one departure per year. Places limited to seven clients.

Travelling far beyond Namibia’s classic highlights, we’ll explore the immense desert valleys, dune-fringed plains and isolated mountain landscapes of Kaokoland and the far northwest — a place where Himba communities still maintain a traditional way of life and the roads often dissolve into little more than tracks across sand and stone.

Designed for photographers seeking a wilderness experience, far from the well-known tourist circuits, this itinerary combines dramatic landscapes, cultural encounters, astrophotography and wildlife opportunities with long days immersed in mesmerising scenery.

What makes this tour different?

Much of Kaokoland remains inaccessible to ordinary visitors, with vast areas reached only by carefully planned overland travel. Days can pass without encountering another vehicle, and many of the locations we photograph are places few travellers – let alone photographers – ever experience. This is not simply a photography tour through Namibia’s highlights. It is a true wilderness expedition into one of the least explored corners of southern Africa, designed for photographers seeking originality, atmosphere and a genuine sense of discovery.

Will Gray on what makes this trip special...

We travel in a small group using a fully equipped 4WD expedition minibus, allowing us to reach areas that are inaccessible to most visitors. Throughout the journey, we are supported by a dedicated camping crew and support vehicle, enabling us to venture deep into remote wilderness areas without sacrificing comfort or logistical support.

Accommodation throughout the expedition is varied and forms part of the experience itself. Some nights are spent in carefully selected lodges and permanent camps, while others involve camping in spectacular isolated locations far from settlements, roads or artificial light. Falling asleep beneath vast desert skies and waking to first light over empty valleys becomes part of the rhythm of the journey.

This combination of expedition camping and comfortable lodges allows us to remain flexible, stay close to the best photographic locations and experience these landscapes in a far more immersive way than conventional tours allow.

Throughout the expedition, there will be plenty of opportunity for one-to-one tuition covering landscape photography, wildlife photography and astrophotography in remote environments.

Road conditions in northwest Namibia can be rough and journey times are sometimes long, but this is precisely what allows access to landscapes that few photographers ever experience properly. Flexibility is essential, and plans may occasionally shift according to weather, road conditions or photographic opportunities

The rewards, however, are immense: huge open landscapes, remarkable cultural encounters, extraordinary night skies and the rare feeling of travelling far beyond the familiar.

For photographers drawn to remote places and adventurous travel, Kaokoland is unforgettable.
