Namibia Photography Adventure

A small-group photographic journey through Namibia’s deserts, wildlife regions and coastal wilderness — led by award-winning photographer and zoologist Will Gray

Namibia is one of the most visually extraordinary countries on Earth – a land of vast desert landscapes, ancient geology, dramatic light and remarkable wildlife adapted to some of the harshest conditions on the planet.

Travelling in a comfortable 4WD minibus and staying in superb camps and lodges, this adventure photography tour is designed to immerse you in that environment, combining iconic locations such as Sossusvlei, Deadvlei and Kolmanskop with wildlife photography in Etosha and Dorob national parks, the giant dunes of Sandwich Harbour, and the mesmerising Milky Way arching over quiver trees and the Spitzkoppe mountains.

With a background in zoology and decades of field experience across Africa, I lead these expeditions with a focus on natural history, fieldcraft and creating meaningful, atmospheric images — not just ticking off locations.

Itinerary

This itinerary is designed around light, landscape and wildlife opportunities, allowing time to work key locations properly, rather than rushing between them. Please note that we may need to make small alterations to the route and accommodation due to various factors.

A photography-focused
expedition approach

This is not a fast-paced sightseeing tour. The trip is structured around early mornings, late evenings and carefully planned shooting opportunities to make the most of Namibia’s extraordinary light and landscapes.

Group sizes are kept small to allow for personalised tuition, field guidance and flexibility in response to weather and conditions. The emphasis throughout is on understanding light in extreme landscapes, improving composition in large-scale environments, wildlife fieldcraft and developing a personal photographic style.

Will Gray on what makes this trip special...

Having explored all corners of Namibia on numerous visits, I think this photography tour includes the best combination of locations and experiences in a 17-day itinerary. It's been carefully designed to allow enough time to really immerse yourself in the place on a comprehensive but relaxed itinerary, with plenty of two-night stays.

As well as iconic  photographic moments, like witnessing sunrise at Deadvlei in the heart of the Namib Desert or watching dusk enflame the ochre-coloured massif of Spitzkoppe, we will seek out other subjects to focus our cameras on – whether it's the Milky Way arching over a grove of quiver trees, a herd of elephants drinking at a waterhole in Etosha or patterns of light and shade creeping through the desert-consumed houses of the Kolmanskop ghost town.

Throughout the tour, you'll receive as much one-to-one tuition on landscape, astro and wildlife photography as you like. As well as mini workshops, I'll offer tips on how you can take your photography to the next level. We'll hold relaxed critiques of each other's images and learn how to continue the creative process using Lightroom.

We'll travel in comfort using a new, specially-adapted 4WD Toyota Quantum 10-seater minibus with our friendly driver at the wheel and plenty of space for luggage, camera bags and tripods. A large onboard fridge will be stocked with drinks and snacks for picnic lunches and sundowners in the wilderness, hosted by myself or my wife, Sally. Accommodation includes a fantastic line-up of carefully chosen lodges, safari camps, farmsteads and guesthouses, with most meals included.

Our journey around Namibia will be full of incredible photo locations, but you will also be able to enjoy several exciting excursions – all included – that range from guided hikes and game drives to sea kayaking.

It was a truly wonderful trip! An amazing variety of sights and experiences. Loads of photography opportunities and instruction. Varied and comfortable accommodation, plus good food and drink. A comfortable vehicle and a smoothly run operation. I'd recommend it to anyone.
