All the time you need to get that perfect shot
Don't expect a classic sightseeing tour of Costa Rica, rushing from one highlight to the next. The image of an acorn woodpecker, above, for example, was taken during a 4hr photography session at a cloud forest location specially designed for photographers – with viewing platforms, feeders and beautiful, soft backgrounds. Slow-paced days; patient, unhurried photography, and intimate wildlife experiences are hallmarks of this wildlife photography tour.
Group sizes of just seven allow for one-to-one tuition, field guidance and personal feedback.

Who is this wildlife photography tour for?
You can be a complete beginner or an advanced photographer... with just seven clients in our group, I will be able to give you dedicated one-to-one tuition to help you try out new techniques and develop as a photographer.
We will travel in a spacious minibus with an expert local driver/guide and stay in some of Costa Rica's best ecolodges. The photography tour begins and ends with a relaxed night in a lovely hotel in San José, and each day is planned to allow rest time and interesting stops on our road journeys.

What special wildlife species will we see in Costa Rica?
It's all pretty special to be honest! But there are a few 'target' species that we will be going out of our way to try to spot and photograph. The sunbittern, pictured above, is one of them. We will visit a secret river location to track them down and hopefully capture their butterfly-like wing display. We will also seek out a nesting pair of critically endangered great green macaws and spend time at a dedicated hide for photographing king vultures. Then there are snowcap hummingbirds, resplendent quetzals, yellow eyelash pit vipers, red-eyed tree frogs... who knows, with three nights on the Osa Peninsula we may even spot a puma!

Will Gray on what makes this trip special...
Having studied zoology at university back in the early 1990s, Costa Rica has always been high on my list of places to explore. It's a huge thrill to now be researching a wildlife travel guidebook to this biodiverse country for Bradt (to be published in 2027). Not only has it given me the opportunity to delve into every corner of Costa Rica, tracking down and photographing its extraordinary variety of wildlife, but it has also provided the firsthand insight for creating this photography tour.
The 17-day itinerary has been carefully planned with expert logistical input from our ground handlers ST Costa Rica. By using their fully-licensed vehicles and registered driver/guides, you can be confident that this tour adheres to all local regulations.
Our accommodation includes some of Costa Rica's finest ecolodges – many of them with their own private nature reserves. We have also included properties renowned for the special photography experiences that they offer. Combine this with several nature photography activities (all included in the tour) and you have a trip that maximises your potential for returning home with some truly memorable images.
We don't rush. The tour features numerous two- and three-night stays. That's important because photographing wildlife in the rainforest is challenging. You need time to review and refine your technique before moving on to the next location. My role is to help you – no matter what level of experience you have – to find the wildlife and get the shots you've always dreamed of taking.
Throughout the tour, you'll receive as much one-to-one tuition on wildlife, macro and landscape photography as you like. As well as mini-workshops, I'll offer tips on how you can take your photography to the next level. We'll hold relaxed critiques of each other's images and learn how to continue the creative process using Lightroom or Photoshop.
We've put a lot of thought into the itinerary – and continue to refine it with ongoing recces and research trips. As well as both Pacific and Atlantic lowland rainforest, we'll be exploring the Atlantic foothills, the cloud forests of the Central Highlands, the Pacific coast and – most crucially – the Osa Peninsula. This variety of habitats gives us a staggering range of species to photograph – from toucans, terrapins and tree frogs to hummingbirds, howler monkeys and humpback whales. Unlike many Costa Rica tours, we include the Osa Peninsula. One of the world's richest areas for wildlife, it's the climax to our trip and not to be missed.
We'll travel in comfort using a 14-seater minibus, so everyone has a window seat and plenty of space for camera bags and tripods. Our wonderful driver/guide adds an essential local touch to the trip and will be invaluable in our quest to track down and photograph Costa Rica's amazing wildlife.
